Choose A Name For Your Dog From 10 Celebrity Dogs
65
I like a short name for a dog, one with at least one consonant. My profile picture shows Drake, a great lab we had who lived to the ripe old age of 14. We had another dog named Jag and the newest member of our family is named Skeet. She is named for the sport of skeet shooting but she is afraid of guns, but that’s another story. I know a Jack Russell named Pip which is a fine name for a little dog or for an owner who loves Charles Dickens. But, if you’re stuck for a dog name, you might consider some of these names from great dogs of the past. It’s my list of celebrity dogs.
1. Buster
I once had a dog named Buster but the name isn’t used much today. It’s believed the name came from Buster Keaton, the silent film star. Buster Brown was a comic strip character created by an artist who had ties to the Buster Brown Shoe Company.
2. Stubby
Stubby served 18 months in World War I. He was a tough Bull Terrier who had the knack of knowing when a gas attack was coming. His army pals noticed this and were grateful for his early warning system. He even was able to catch a fleeing enemy by the seat of his pants.
3. Nipper
I’m surprised this little guy’s name doesn’t show up in crossword puzzles or quiz shows. He is the dog listening to his late master’s voice in those old ads for the gramophone.
4. Balto
This brave guy was the lead dog in the heroic team of Siberian huskies who carried the life saving medicine for those suffering from diphtheria. It was a run from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska in 1925.
5. Bingo
This is another great trivia question. What is the name of the dog on the Cracker Jack box?
Now you know.
6. Rover
Rover was once a very popular dog name He was the first movie star dog. He made the dog world happy with a silent movie in 1905.
7. Flash
Flash was a television star dog who appeared in The Dukes of Hazzard.
8. Chips
He was a famous war dog from World War II. He once made his own attack on an enemy pillbox. The bad guys took a few bites and surrendered.
9. Toto
This was, of course, Dorothy’s dog in The Wizard Of Oz.
10. Fido
This is another dog name which is now out of fashion. Fido is Latin for “faithful” and became popular when Abe Lincoln used it for his dog in Springfield, Illinois. At the White House, he had another dog named Little Jip.
I would suggest trying out your new dog’s name by yelling it out a few times in the backyard. I think you should stay away from any Biblical names. You’ll sound kind of silly calling out Eliphaz, Nehemiah, or Zebedee. But I have known a few dogs where the name Devil would be appropriate.

We are close to losing Julio. The vet thinks he has a cancer. When he goes, no more dogs until we are old and house bound. We have too many far-away places we want to visit!

"I know, Will, but.........."
Yeah, we'll probably get another long before we call it a day on traveling. We love our dogs!
Will just from knowing you this short time..I think you will too..Dog people just can't not have one..need to hear those barks, the sound of their nails as they cross the floor, the jingles of the collars, and mostly the unconditional love..
My wife wants a little yapper...a Chihuahua.
My neighbor has the cutest cross breed with a Chihuahua..and mixed with Yorkie...Adorable and very sweet..I watch his owner walk him every morning...that's his baby.I'm not much into yippie dogs but one breed I would have as they don't shed is a Bichon Frise
A great list of great dog names, thanks for putting this list together. Voted up.
